Let's rant a little bit
I find it amusing that at this point in human history people are still surprised by how easily they relate to love songs. As if every author knew exactly what they felt at that exact moment and thus, decided to express that exclusively for them. It is not even a question of demographics: there’s enough for everyone everywhere, be it your average indie artist (which, by the way, gets me to another question to be discussed later: is indie still indie when they are all together grouped in an indie genre represented by mostly the same two or three “indie” labels?) or the most pimped up rapper in the ghetto.
WAKE UP!! It is truly easy to relate to love songs, there is no genius mind or soul syncing process involve: fucking everyone knows love or at least believe it does and almost everyone has an unconscious tendency to do so. We relate because we WANT to relate and because the theme is so used up that it even works the opposite way: we make our moments or situations similar to those we’ve been hearing about for our whole lives and worse than that, we are stupid enough to think “Wow, he’s liek toatlly feeling what Im feeling rieght nao.”
Now give me someone who talks about the subtleties of life: borrowing a top, for example or going through every addiction possible thanks to the help of your little animal friends. If you really want love that much, a song that expresses a different kind of love, the love between a hairy furry sweet-looking goat with his owner, and then, only then, you’ll see a tear running down my cheek and an understanding look.
